The tech doesn't define the marketing. People are using the tech and to be leaders they've got to select. In fact, choice is critical to effective management. That's why I specialize in killing ideas so we don't wander off into the cloud, mashups or whatever the metaphor du jour is. Once you've selected for the goal, navigation requires consistent correction. Too much metaphor and we get lost. I’m raising my hand shaking a bunch of bright shiny objects. I am particularly weak on goal-setting and am conflicted b/c so much of interesting business evolution is ad hoc and accidental but I assume it also must evolve from some sort of plan.
